Carlos
grew up in the historic Cavalier Manor section of Portsmouth in
a single parent household, yet has always been surrounded by family
and friends all of his life. He uses his background and experiences
as a young black man growing up in Portsmouth with various adversities
to strenghten his resolve and achieve with excellence in all that
he does.
Seward
has been and is currently involved with many activities. These include
being a student researcher for the Race, Time, and Place Digital
History Project at Norfolk State University, serving as President
of the NSU History Club (2002-2003 and 2003-2004); president of
the Senior Class of Norfolk State University (2003-2004); acting
president of Norfolk State University NAACP (Fall 2003); Co-captain,
Honda Campus All-Star Academic Team; peer mentor and history/english
tutor for the university's student support services division; member

and is currently seeking membership into Phi Alpha Theta (History
Honors Society).
Carlos
has also distinguished himself as a researcher and an academician.
During the 2003-2004 academic year, he conducted orginial research
for the university's Race, Time, and Place Project. His senior thesis
research work is entitled Jeffrey Wilson and the Colored Notes:
1924-1929. The research explores a column entitled "Colored
Notes" written by Jeffery Wilson in
the Portsmouth Star newspaper during the mid and late 1920's.
Through his research, Seward concluded that the information that
one finds within the "Colored Notes" is considered a valuable
contribution to the general public because it documents the significance
of the history, events, achievements, and many contributions of
Portsmouth's Black community. The "Colored Notes" as written
by Jeffery Wilson not only informed and education the Black community,
but also served as a voice for the Black community against socail
and racial injustices. This research was successfully completed
and presented to the Portsmouth Historical Society on April 30,
2004 with great reviews. This research exemplifies the scholarship
and a committment to the contribution of local history and to academia
in general.
After
graduating from Norfolk State University in the Spring of 2004,
Carlos desires to earn a masters degree in History and a Ph.D. degree
in Higher Education Administration.. His career goals include becoming
a high school History teacher, a university professor, and then
moving into university administration, eventually becoming a university
provost, then becoming a university president.
